by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.181

ayoguḍāṃ pi gilanto jvalantāṃ labheya saukhyaṃ udare pradīpte |
saṃchinne yakṛvṛkkaphuṣphase ca na bodhisatve paruṣāṇi kṛtvā || 181 ||

“It would be easier for a man who swallowed a red-hot ball of iron to ensure his safety, though his stomach were on fire, and his liver, kidneys and lungs pierced, than it would be for one who dealt harshly with the Bodhisattva. (181)
