by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.165

yo atra mānaṃ jane na prasādaṃ puṇyopapete dhutaraje śākyasiṃhe |
na tasya jātu bhave svastibhāvo cyutaś ca kṣipraṃ vraje durgatīṣu || 165 ||

“But he who nurtures a mind distrustful of him who is endued with merit, who has shed his passions, the Shakyan lion, verily, there will be no prosperous state for him. And when he passes away he will forthwith pass to the bourne of ill. (165)
