by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.144

समृद्धे पक्वे यथ शालिक्षेत्रे विद्युत्पतेया अशनिवरचक्रं ।
तथैव शुक्ला परमार्थधर्मा कामनिदानं अफला भवन्ति ॥ १४४ ॥

samṛddhe pakve yatha śālikṣetre vidyutpateyā aśanivaracakraṃ |
tathaiva śuklā paramārthadharmā kāmanidānaṃ aphalā bhavanti || 144 ||

“As when during a thunderstorm the lightning strikes a field of luxuriant ripe rice, so because of sensual pleasures do states of the highest good become fruitless. (144)
