Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.23

imaṃ ca hīnaṃ vijahiya iṣṭibhāvaṃ careyaṃ śuddhaṃ aśabalabrahmacaryaṃ |
varje kāmaṃ duḥkhakaraṃ rogamūlaṃ seveyaṃ buddhāṃ hatarajaniṣkileśāṃ || 23 ||

“Abandoning this base state of desire, may I live the pure, untarnished holy life. May I renounce the pleasures of sense, the source of ill, the root of passion, and follow after the Buddhas who have destroyed defilement and are rid of the lusts.” (23)
