by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 60.3

सतां पादरजः श्रेयो न गिरि कांचनामयं ।
सो रजो शोकहानाय स गिरि शोकवर्धनः ॥ ३ ॥

satāṃ pādarajaḥ śreyo na giri kāṃcanāmayaṃ |
so rajo śokahānāya sa giri śokavardhanaḥ || 3 ||

The dust on the feet of good men is better than a mountain of gold. That dust decreases sorrow; that mountain increases it. (3)
