Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 58.3

प्रत्युत्पन्नेषु कार्येषु गुह्यम् अर्थं न प्रकाशयेत् ।
लभन्ति पण्डिता बुद्धिं जलमध्ये व वानरः ॥ ३ ॥

pratyutpanneṣu kāryeṣu guhyam arthaṃ na prakāśayet |
labhanti paṇḍitā buddhiṃ jalamadhye va vānaraḥ || 3 ||

One should not disclose one’s secret purpose before one’s task is done. Clever people get to know of it, like the monkey on the sea. (3)
