by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 55.26

तस्य शोकपरीतस्य विनाशं गच्छि उच्छ्रिति ।
ततश् च सुर्मनो यक्षो तत्रैवान्तरहायिथा ॥ २६ ॥

tasya śokaparītasya vināśaṃ gacchi ucchriti |
tataś ca surmano yakṣo tatraivāntarahāyithā || 26 ||

Then, overcome with grief, Mara’s lyre slipped from his armpit and the disconsolate fiend forthwith vanished from sight. (26)
