This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.
Verse 55.21
पंचमा स्त्यानमिद्धं ते षष्ठी भीरु प्रवुच्चति ।
सप्तमा विचिकित्सा ते मानार्थो भोति अष्टमा ।
लोभो ति श्लोको सत्कारो मिथ्यालब्धो च यो यशो ॥ २१ ॥
paṃcamā styānamiddhaṃ te ṣaṣṭhī bhīru pravuccati |
saptamā vicikitsā te mānārtho bhoti aṣṭamā |
lobho ti śloko satkāro mithyālabdho ca yo yaśo || 21 ||
“The fifth is called sloth and torpor, and the sixth fear; the seventh is doubt, and the eighth is pride. Then there are greed, and falsely won praise, esteem and renown. (21)
