by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 55.11

शरीरं उपशुष्यति पित्तं श्लेष्मं च वातजं ।
मान्सानि लोहितं चैव अवजीर्यतु सांप्रतं ॥ ११ ॥

śarīraṃ upaśuṣyati pittaṃ śleṣmaṃ ca vātajaṃ |
mānsāni lohitaṃ caiva avajīryatu sāṃprataṃ || 11 ||

“The body dries up, and its gall, phlegm and humour; let the flesh and blood also presently waste away. (11)
