This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 54.16

विक्रमामि न शक्नोमि भूमौ पतामि वेगितो ।
दृढो वारत्रको पाशो पादं मे परिकर्तति ॥ १६ ॥

vikramāmi na śaknomi bhūmau patāmi vegito |
dṛḍho vāratrako pāśo pādaṃ me parikartati || 16 ||

I am making a valiant effort to escape, but I cannot, and fall back violently to the ground. These stout thongs of leather cut my feet. (16)
