This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 53.60

भूतानां च निनादो आकाशे पृथिवीये च निर्घोषो ।
वाता च विप्रवान्ति चिन्तयति ऋषि अहो कष्टं ॥ ६० ॥

bhūtānāṃ ca ninādo ākāśe pṛthivīye ca nirghoṣo |
vātā ca vipravānti cintayati ṛṣi aho kaṣṭaṃ || 60 ||

The cry of these creatures echoed in the air and over the earth, the winds blew it onwards. In apprehension, the seer exclaimed, “Alas, what is wrong? (60)
