This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 53.54

तं महार्थं जीर्णेषु दुर्बलेषु च पण्डिता प्रशंसन्ति ।
परिचर्यं हि जनाधिप त्रीणि पि तस्यास्ति अंगानि ॥ ५४ ॥

taṃ mahārthaṃ jīrṇeṣu durbaleṣu ca paṇḍitā praśaṃsanti |
paricaryaṃ hi janādhipa trīṇi pi tasyāsti aṃgāni || 54 ||

“Wise men extol this serving of the old and weak as a thing of great profit. For, O king, three results issue from it. (54)
