by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 53.6

तेन समयेन भगवां वानप्रस्थान तापसकुलस्मिं ।
अत्यन्तशुद्धे सत्वं उपपद्यिथ बुद्धिसम्पन्नो ॥ ६ ॥

tena samayena bhagavāṃ vānaprasthāna tāpasakulasmiṃ |
atyantaśuddhe satvaṃ upapadyitha buddhisampanno || 6 ||

At that time the Exalted One, endowed with wisdom, came to life in a perfectly pure ascetic family of brahman recluses. (6)
