Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 52.125

सो अनृतवचनभीतो अलम् इति तां देवतां प्रतिक्षिपिय ।
मुद्रकुलच्छहरेण्डा फाणिकृतं यूषम् उपभुंजे ॥ १२५ ॥

so anṛtavacanabhīto alam iti tāṃ devatāṃ pratikṣipiya |
mudrakulacchahareṇḍā phāṇikṛtaṃ yūṣam upabhuṃje || 125 ||

Dismayed by these cozening words, he said, “No more of that” and rebuffed the goddesses. Then he partook of vetch, beans, peas and soup of molasses. (125)
