by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 52.27

यदा चाभिनिष्क्रमेसि प्रव्रज्याये नरोत्तमो ।
तदा स वचनम् आह बहुसम्यग्गिरां ब्रवीत् ॥ २७ ॥

tadā sa vacanam āha bahusamyaggirāṃ bravīt || 27 ||

And when the Best of Men left home and took to a wanderer’s life, then did he speak and utter a most perfect speech. (27)
