Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 52.6

तासां च तीरेषु द्रुमा सुजाता महा महान्तं विटपं समुद्गता ।
अभ्युद्गता ब्रह्मपुरं च अम्बराद् वातेरिता सर्वदिशा प्रवान्ति ॥ ६ ॥

tāsāṃ ca tīreṣu drumā sujātā mahā mahāntaṃ viṭapaṃ samudgatā |
abhyudgatā brahmapuraṃ ca ambarād vāteritā sarvadiśā pravānti || 6 ||

On their banks grow stately trees, with branches shooting high, rising up from the sky towards Brahma’s citadel. Stirred by the wind, they sway in all directions. (6)
