This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 51.43

दृष्टा नागा च नागी च प्रार्थयन्ता मानुषं भवं ।
किं करिष्यामि शुभं कर्म अपायसमतिक्रमं ॥ ४३ ॥

dṛṣṭā nāgā ca nāgī ca prārthayantā mānuṣaṃ bhavaṃ |
kiṃ kariṣyāmi śubhaṃ karma apāyasamatikramaṃ || 43 ||

Now that I have seen how Nagas, male and female, long for the life of human beings, what fair deed shall I perform that will make me safe from a state of woe? (43)
