Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 50.1

पूर्वं वासनिवासेन प्रत्युत्पन्ने हितेन वा ।
एवं संजायते प्रेम्नं उत्पलं वा यथोदके ॥ १ ॥

pūrvaṃ vāsanivāsena pratyutpanne hitena vā |
evaṃ saṃjāyate premnaṃ utpalaṃ vā yathodake || 1 ||

By living together in the past and by kindness in the present, love is born as surely as the lotus in the water. (1)
