by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 49.35

उपलभ्यति कायो करण्डसमो ।
उपलभ्यति काये च सर्पसमा ।
उपलभ्यति स्कन्ध अमित्रसमा ।
अथ किस्य ममातु रतिर् व भवे ॥ ३५ ॥

upalabhyati kāyo karaṇḍasamo |
upalabhyati kāye ca sarpasamā |
upalabhyati skandha amitrasamā |
atha kisya mamātu ratir va bhave || 35 ||

The body is like a serpent’s slough; in the body is a serpent’s year. The skandhas are like a foe. Then why should I find pleasure? (35)
