Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 49.33

gatiṣu santrastamānaso śṛṇohi |
mama tāta me yena na asti rati |
jarāvyādhi ripur maraṇaṃ tṛtīyaṃ |
abhimardati tena me nāsti ratiḥ || 33 ||

With a mind awed by the spheres of existence listen, father, while I tell you why I find no pleasure. Old age and disease, and the enemy death as the third, oppress me; that is why I find no pleasure. (33)
