Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 46.26

विचित्रगम्भीरकथो बहुश्रुतो किलेशघाती परवादिमर्दनो ।
स भिक्षु शोभेत स्वयंभुशासने नभे व चन्द्रो परिपूर्णमण्डलो ॥ २६ ॥

vicitragambhīrakatho bahuśruto kileśaghātī paravādimardano |
sa bhikṣu śobheta svayaṃbhuśāsane nabhe va candro paripūrṇamaṇḍalo || 26 ||

He whose eloquence is brilliant and profound, whose learning is great, who destroys the lusts and crushes his opponents, he, monks, shines in his teaching of the Self-becoming One as the full-orbed moon shines in the sky. (26)
