Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 42.15

धर्मो हि वै रक्षति धर्मचारिं छत्रं महन्तं यथ वर्षकाले ।
धर्मेण गुप्तो मम धर्मपालो अन्यस्य अस्थीनि सुखी कुमारो ॥ १५ ॥

dharmo hi vai rakṣati dharmacāriṃ chatraṃ mahantaṃ yatha varṣakāle |
dharmeṇa gupto mama dharmapālo anyasya asthīni sukhī kumāro || 15 ||

Verily dharma protects him who lives by dharma, as a large umbrella protects us in time of rain. My Dharmapala was guarded by dharma. These are the bones of another. It is well with my boy. (15)
