by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 42.14

न हि धर्मो अधर्मो च उभौ समविपाकिनौ ।
अधर्मो निरयं नेति धर्मो प्रापेति स्वर्गतिं ॥ १४ ॥

na hi dharmo adharmo ca ubhau samavipākinau |
adharmo nirayaṃ neti dharmo prāpeti svargatiṃ || 14 ||

For dharma and what is not dharma do not bear similar fruit. What is not dharma leads to hell. Dharma wins the heavenly bourne. (14)
