by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 42.5

ये ब्राह्मणा श्रवणशीलवन्तो घोषेषिणो याचनका उपेन्ति ।
प्रियं मो तेषां श्रवणदर्शनं च तस्मा हि अस्माद् दहरो न मृय्यति ॥ ५ ॥

ye brāhmaṇā śravaṇaśīlavanto ghoṣeṣiṇo yācanakā upenti |
priyaṃ mo teṣāṃ śravaṇadarśanaṃ ca tasmā hi asmād daharo na mṛyyati || 5 ||

As for the brahmans and recluses who come begging and crying to us, we are glad to hear and see them. Therefore it is that none of us dies young. (5)
