Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 42.1

प्राणं न हिंसेय नदिन्नमादिये पापं च कर्मं मनसापि न चरेत् ।
सर्वे अनार्जं परिवर्जेयामः तस्मा हि अस्माद् दहरो न मृय्यति ॥ १ ॥

prāṇaṃ na hiṃseya nadinnamādiye pāpaṃ ca karmaṃ manasāpi na caret |
sarve anārjaṃ parivarjeyāmaḥ tasmā hi asmād daharo na mṛyyati || 1 ||

None of us harms a living soul, nor takes what is not his. None of us sins in deed or thought. We all shun what is not upright. Therefore it is that none of us dies young. (1)
