by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 38.4

नमे नमन्तस्य भजे भजन्तं कृतानुकार्यस्य करेय अर्थं ।
असंभजन्तं च न संभजेय नानर्थकामस्य करेय अर्थं ॥ ४ ॥

name namantasya bhaje bhajantaṃ kṛtānukāryasya kareya arthaṃ |
asaṃbhajantaṃ ca na saṃbhajeya nānarthakāmasya kareya arthaṃ || 4 ||

Honour him who honours you; share with him who shares with you. Do good to him who has done his duty by you. Share not with him who shares not. Serve not him who does not wish you well. (4)
