by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

प्रहाय स्वकुलं धीतरा च करोति श्रद्धां पुन कुम्भकाशिये ॥ ४७ ॥

“His wife may be of high degree, honourable, chaste and devoted, but yet a man may leave her, daughter of a good family though she be, and put his faith in a slave-girl. (47)
