Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 37.19

तुवं नो ज्ञाती पुरिमासु जातिषु त्वं कौशिका मत्सरिपापधर्मः ।
तुह्यानुकंपाय इहागता स्म मा पापधर्मो निरथं व्रजेसि ॥ १९ ॥

tuvaṃ no jñātī purimāsu jātiṣu tvaṃ kauśikā matsaripāpadharmaḥ |
tuhyānukaṃpāya ihāgatā sma mā pāpadharmo nirathaṃ vrajesi || 19 ||

In our former lives, you were our kinsman, but now you are a sinful miser. We are come hither out of compassion for you, to prevent you from passing in sin to hell. (19)
