by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 37.15

नत्वाहं कौशिक ब्रूमि भुंजाहि च ददाहि च ।
आर्यमार्गसमापन्नो एकांशं विन्दते सुखं ॥ १५ ॥

natvāhaṃ kauśika brūmi bhuṃjāhi ca dadāhi ca |
āryamārgasamāpanno ekāṃśaṃ vindate sukhaṃ || 15 ||

I tell you, Koshika, to eat only after sharing. Thus will you enter on the noble path. He finds no happiness who lives for himself. (15)
