by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 37.14

सरस्वतीं सो जुहोति चाहुतां गमये अपि ।
यो अतिथिस्मिं आसीने दत्त्वा भुंजति भोजनं ॥ १४ ॥

sarasvatīṃ so juhoti cāhutāṃ gamaye api |
yo atithismiṃ āsīne dattvā bhuṃjati bhojanaṃ || 14 ||

As one who sacrifices to the Sarasvati and to deep Gaya is he who, when a guest is seated with him, only eats his food after sharing it. (14)
