by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 37.8

मोघं तस्य हुतं भोति मोघं चापि समाहितं ।
यो अतिथिस्मिं आसीने अदत्त्वा भुंजति भोजनं ॥ ८ ॥

moghaṃ tasya hutaṃ bhoti moghaṃ cāpi samāhitaṃ |
yo atithismiṃ āsīne adattvā bhuṃjati bhojanaṃ || 8 ||

Vain is the sacrifice and vain the desire of him who, when a guest is seated with him eats his food without sharing it. (8)
