by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 35.80

नापि मह्यं मरणभयं कहिं तु जातो न म्रीयते मनुजो ।
बुद्धं तु अप्रतिसमं न द्रक्ष्यन् तेन रोदामि ॥ ८० ॥

nāpi mahyaṃ maraṇabhayaṃ kahiṃ tu jāto na mrīyate manujo |
buddhaṃ tu apratisamaṃ na drakṣyan tena rodāmi || 80 ||

“And yet I have no fear of death. For how can a man be born and not die? I weep because I shall not see the peerless Buddha. (80)
