This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 35.57

यस्मिं तदहो जाते सर्वो ओभासितो अभूल् लोको ।
तं तुवं ब्राह्मण दृष्ट्वा किं रोदिषि श्रोतुम् इच्छामि ॥ ५७ ॥

yasmiṃ tadaho jāte sarvo obhāsito abhūl loko |
taṃ tuvaṃ brāhmaṇa dṛṣṭvā kiṃ rodiṣi śrotum icchāmi || 57 ||

“I want to hear, brahman, why you weep on seeing him, on the day of whose birth the whole world was bathed in radiance. (57)
