This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 35.54

तं अश्रुपूर्णनयनं राजा शुद्धोदनो इदम् अवोचत् ।
किं दानि ते कुमारं दृष्ट्वा दौर्मनस्यम् उत्पन्नं ॥ ५४ ॥

taṃ aśrupūrṇanayanaṃ rājā śuddhodano idam avocat |
kiṃ dāni te kumāraṃ dṛṣṭvā daurmanasyam utpannaṃ || 54 ||

Seeing his eyes welling with tears King Shuddhodana asked him, “What, I pray you, is this sadness that has come over you on seeing the child? (54)
