by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 34.169

परिचंक्रमतां तेषां धरणीरजो क्रमवरां न स्पृशाति ।
न च सानं पश्यति पदं पृथिव्यां इदं अपि आश्चर्यं ॥ १६९ ॥

paricaṃkramatāṃ teṣāṃ dharaṇīrajo kramavarāṃ na spṛśāti |
na ca sānaṃ paśyati padaṃ pṛthivyāṃ idaṃ api āścaryaṃ || 169 ||

“As they walk about the dust of the earth does not soil their noble feet. No footprints of theirs are seen on the ground—this, too, is a marvel. (169)
