by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 34.163

विगतमदमानदर्पा अष्ट सहस्रा महेश्वरवराणां ।
देवनरगुरुं कृताञ्जली संप्रतिजातं उपगमेन्सुः ॥ १६३ ॥

vigatamadamānadarpā aṣṭa sahasrā maheśvaravarāṇāṃ |
devanaraguruṃ kṛtāñjalī saṃpratijātaṃ upagamensuḥ || 163 ||

Rid of conceit and pride and arrogance eight-thousand Maheshvaras, with their joined hands raised, approached him who was newly-born and revered of devas and men. (163)
