Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 34.162

तं विज्ञाय च देवा महेश्वरा नाम चित्तवसवर्त्ती ।
मा लक्षणा अकुशला विकल्पयिष्यन्ति द्विजसंघा ॥ १६२ ॥

taṃ vijñāya ca devā maheśvarā nāma cittavasavarttī |
mā lakṣaṇā akuśalā vikalpayiṣyanti dvijasaṃghā || 162 ||

Learning this the saintly devas, called Maheshvaras, (came on the scene) lest the unskilled crowd of the twice-born should seek to interpret the signs. (162)
