This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 34.59

किं कारणं सुरवरेण प्रभा प्रमुक्ता चन्द्रांशुशीतलतरा कनकावदाता ।
येनासुरेश्वरगणा मनुजेश्वराश् च प्रह्लादिता च नरका ज्वलनाग्निकल्पाः ॥ ५९ ॥

kiṃ kāraṇaṃ suravareṇa prabhā pramuktā candrāṃśuśītalatarā kanakāvadātā |
yenāsureśvaragaṇā manujeśvarāś ca prahlāditā ca narakā jvalanāgnikalpāḥ || 59 ||

“Why is a radiance shed by the excellent Sura which is serener than the moonbeam and is pure like gold and gladdens the lords of the Asuras and of men, and the fiery flaming hells?” (59)
