by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 30.53

एषो द्विपदानम् उत्तमो सो चक्षुददो विनायको ।
मानं च मदं च विप्रहा एथ वन्दाम समेत्य काश्यपं ॥ ५३ ॥

eṣo dvipadānam uttamo so cakṣudado vināyako |
mānaṃ ca madaṃ ca viprahā etha vandāma sametya kāśyapaṃ || 53 ||

He, the supreme of two-footed creatures, is a giver of insight; he is a guide. Putting off pride and conceit we gather here to adore Kashyapa. (53)
