Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 30.46

परमकरुणम् उदितयुक्तां गिरां भाषति दशफलयुक्तां ।
अष्टांग्ऽ उपेतचतुष्प्रकारां एतं वा परमं सुभाषितं ॥ ४६ ॥

paramakaruṇam uditayuktāṃ girāṃ bhāṣati daśaphalayuktāṃ |
aṣṭāṃg' upetacatuṣprakārāṃ etaṃ vā paramaṃ subhāṣitaṃ || 46 ||

Wedded to perfect compassion and joy, wedded to the ten fruitions is the speech that he utters. It has the eight qualities and the four modes of the Buddha’s voice—such is this perfect eloquence. (46)
