Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 30.45

आविष्टं गदितं स भाषति उच्चनीचम् अथ अपि मध्यमं ।
अनुपदं अन्वक्षरं विशुद्धं एतं वा परमं सुभाषितं ॥ ४५ ॥

āviṣṭaṃ gaditaṃ sa bhāṣati uccanīcam atha api madhyamaṃ |
anupadaṃ anvakṣaraṃ viśuddhaṃ etaṃ vā paramaṃ subhāṣitaṃ || 45 ||

Penetrating and gushing is his speech, in the high, the low and the middle tone, correct in measure and in sound, and pure—such is this perfect eloquence. (45)
