by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 30.44

सत्यं चापिशुनं च भाषति स सर्वतः पुन मैत्रचित्तो ।
उपकारे परमार्थसंहितं एतं वा परमं सुभाषितं ॥ ४४ ॥

satyaṃ cāpiśunaṃ ca bhāṣati sa sarvataḥ puna maitracitto |
upakāre paramārthasaṃhitaṃ etaṃ vā paramaṃ subhāṣitaṃ || 44 ||

He speaks the truth without malice. Ever is he kindly of heart to others. Rich in the highest good that brings blessing to men—such is this perfect eloquence. (44)
