Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 29.19

yo dharmacakraṃ abhibhūya lokaṃ pravartayati sarvabhūtanukampitaṃ |
etādṛśaṃ devamanuṣyaśreṣṭhaṃ buddhaṃ namasyāmi susvasti bhotu |
dharmaṃ namasyāmi susvasti bhotu saṃghaṃ namasyāmi susvasti bhotu manuṣyato vā amanuṣyato vā || 19 ||

I bow before him, the Buddha, the best of men and devas, who, overcoming the world, set rolling the wheel of dharma for the sake of all creation. Let there be prosperity. I bow before the dharma. Let there be prosperity. I bow before the Sangha. Let prosperity come from man and from demon. (19)
