Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 29.18

tasmā hi taṃ rakṣatha apramattā mātā va putraṃ anukampamānā |
etaṃ pi saṃghe ratanaṃ praṇītaṃ etena satyena susvasti bhotu manuṣyato vā amanuṣyato vā || 18 ||

Therefore do ye keep diligent watch over this man, as a mother shows anxious care for her child. This choicest gem is in the Sangha. By this truth let blessing come from man and from demon. (18)
