Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 28.3

यो वा दुरुक्तं वचनं क्षमेया क्षान्तीबलेन अधिवासयन्तो ।
परुषं श्रुत्वा वचनं अनिष्टं अधिवासनारक्षितो स्वस्त्ययनं तद् आहुः ॥ ३ ॥

yo vā duruktaṃ vacanaṃ kṣameyā kṣāntībalena adhivāsayanto |
paruṣaṃ śrutvā vacanaṃ aniṣṭaṃ adhivāsanārakṣito svastyayanaṃ tad āhuḥ || 3 ||

He verily is a blessing who calms the ill-spoken word, enduring it with the power of forbearance, and who is patient when he hears harsh and offensive speech. (3)
