This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 27.44

पुत्रांश् च भ्रातरां चापि शुरां साहसिकां छवां ।
मा त्वन् ते ईश्वरां कासि ग्रामे जनपदेषु वा ॥ ४४ ॥

putrāṃś ca bhrātarāṃ cāpi śurāṃ sāhasikāṃ chavāṃ |
mā tvan te īśvarāṃ kāsi grāme janapadeṣu vā || 44 ||

“Do not appoint as overlords of village or province even your own sons and brothers, if they be unscrupulous, violent and base. (44)
