Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 27.2

प्रथमो कौशिको आसि द्वितीयो आसि शारिको ।
तृतीयो च शुको आसि सर्वे पण्डितजातिकाः ॥ २ ॥

prathamo kauśiko āsi dvitīyo āsi śāriko |
tṛtīyo ca śuko āsi sarve paṇḍitajātikāḥ || 2 ||

The first was an owl, the second a sharika, the third a parrot, all three of them naturally clever. (2)
