Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 26.54

मृदु संस्पर्शः यो तथागतानां तूर्णं यथा ओतरितमारुतानां ।
न हि बुद्धश्रेष्ठान तथागतानां शरीरम् आगम्य वधो प्रजायति ॥ ५४ ॥

mṛdu saṃsparśaḥ yo tathāgatānāṃ tūrṇaṃ yathā otaritamārutānāṃ |
na hi buddhaśreṣṭhāna tathāgatānāṃ śarīram āgamya vadho prajāyati || 54 ||

“The touch of the Tathagatas is as gentle as that of the breezes that waft lightly down from the sky. The touch of the bodies of the supreme Buddhas, the Tathagatas, inflicts no harm. (54)
