by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 26.27

धर्मचक्रं प्रवर्तित्वा आभां कृत्वा अनुत्तरां ।
संबुद्धो परिनिर्वायेत् महर्षिः क्षीणपुनर्भवो ॥ २७ ॥

dharmacakraṃ pravartitvā ābhāṃ kṛtvā anuttarāṃ |
saṃbuddho parinirvāyet maharṣiḥ kṣīṇapunarbhavo || 27 ||

“When he had set rolling the wheel of dharma and shed abroad that incomparable light, he passed utterly away, a perfect Buddha, a great seer, with all possibility of rebirth extinct. (27)
