by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 23.40

दीपं च लेनं च परायणं च दीपंकरो नाम अभूषि शास्ता ।
इतो असंख्येयतरस्मिं कल्पे स्वाख्यातधर्म्मो भगवां नरेशो ॥ ४० ॥

dīpaṃ ca lenaṃ ca parāyaṇaṃ ca dīpaṃkaro nāma abhūṣi śāstā |
ito asaṃkhyeyatarasmiṃ kalpe svākhyātadharmmo bhagavāṃ nareśo || 40 ||

A most incalculable kalpa ago there was a Master, named Dipamkara, a light, a refuge, and a haven, a preacher of his own dharma, exalted, a prince of men. (40)
